Involved citizens are essential to good government. During my tenure on the City Council, Eagan has been continually recognized for citizen engagement. I have renewed appreciation for this after meetings with citizen advisory commissions to review their objectives and discuss their work plans for the coming year.
A primary way for citizens to be involved with the work of the City is to offer their knowledge and talents in service on advisory commissions. The Advisory Planning, Parks and Recreation, Energy and Environment, and Airport Relations Commissions vet issues to be considered by the City Council and make recommendations for Council consideration. This input is valuable to the Council in making well-informed decisions in the best interests of the City and our residents.
I often encourage residents to seek appointment to an advisory commission that I think would benefit from their particular insights and interests. For those who are interested, this experience is excellent training for city council candidacy. Four current Council members were advisory commission members. I will continue to encourage residents to help assure good governance through participation on citizen advisory commissions.
